Hello!
This week I have my PSHE hat on (that’s Personal Social & Health Education) because we are currently looking at revision techniques with Year 10. A lot of parents ask about this so I thought it might be useful.
Revision is one of those things that we think we know how to do, but some approaches are definitely more effective than others. The most popular ways to revise are: rereading, writing summary notes, and highlighting – a lot of people reading this will have used a highlighter when revising. But research has shown that these are actually the least effective techniques.
The BBC report on that (admittedly lengthy) article has the slightly catchier title: “Revision techniques – the good, the OK and the useless” and is well worth a read.
Their findings suggest that one of the best techniques for successful revision is “Practice Testing”. This is, quite simply, stunningly effective. Students who used a Practice Test, scored more than 7 times higher than those who didn’t, when they were all tested a week later. Flashcards are excellent for this and a good system for using flashcards is the Leitner system; there’s a YouTube video below.
Today’s link is to a Leitner System video where you can find out about this effective revision tool.
As always, don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions or enquiries.
