The new Sixth Form experience

For those joining Derby Grammar School’s Sixth Form this September (2022), you are in for a treat. Miss Stockton, incoming Director of Post-16 Education, has been working incredibly hard to organise a brand-new experience for our pupils.

Miss Stockton has created a full programme designed to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and motivation to reach their post-education goals – whether that be employment or university.

Included in the programme are a range of external speakers who will come into school to share their advice and insights into life in different professions. For example, we will be hearing from a Doctor, an Engineer, a Dentist and a representative from the F1 industry, to name but a few. All of these sessions are designed to inspire pupils to explore their interests. It also gives a glimpse into potential career paths which will help them make more informed decisions about their future, when the time comes.

Also in the programme are university sessions, where we will be visiting University of Nottingham, and hearing from staff at University of Derby, University of Sheffield and Coventry University. The opportunities open to pupils now are endless and we will be catering for everyone’s needs, covering sessions on apprenticeships and gap years, too.

Miss Stockton firmly believes that the social aspect of Sixth Form is equally as important, and has arranged a series of events where pupils can get to know each other better and have some fun outside of school. These can include a trip to the Christmas Markets, go karting, escape rooms and a curry night (all subject to change). A Sixth Form social committee will be set up to help plan, organise and run half-termly socials.
