Star student Amogha Ramasharan, who is also an accomplished musician, has matched three of his peers at Derby Grammar School with a full house of three A* grades.
Amogha (18), from Littleover, Derby, achieved top marks in Biology, Chemistry and Music – and is planning to take a gap year and then go through Clearing and study medicine at university next year.
He said:
I’ve been quite nervous, and wondered whether I’d put in enough hard work to get the results I wanted. I was actually quite tense. But now I’ve seen the results, I’m ecstatic. I put in so many hours and now it’s all paid off.
Amogha is hoping to work within the NHS during his gap year, as well as volunteering at London Road Community Hospital, Derby, or even teaching piano!
His fantastic performance is reflected by the Rykneld Road school as a whole, which returned its best ever results, even outshining last year’s record results.
A whopping 53 per cent of grades awarded were A or A*, compared with 40 per cent in 2020. A-C grades accounted for 94 per cent of results compared with 80 per cent last year.
Outgoing head teacher Dr Ruth Norris said:
I am tremendously proud of the achievements of our Year 13 pupils.
These superb A-Level grades have been secured against the odds of two academic years of Covid-19 disruption. They are a testament to the commitment, hard work, ingenuity and resilience of our pupils and staff alike.
I wish our pupils all the best as they move on to take up some of the most competitive university places in the country and take their first steps towards successful careers.
Mr Paul Logan will take the helm of Derby Grammar School in September, and has already been highly involved with the school since being announced as incoming Head in December. He commented:
The Year 13 pupils I have met have exemplified endeavour and resilience. These qualities are reflected in this years’ excellent set of results, as well as the hard work of both pupils and staff. The continuity of education offered by DGS through the pandemic has borne fruit today, and these results underline the high academic standards we are known for.
