It has been a spring of sporting success for pupils at Derby Grammar School.

Four boys from the school have been selected to play for their counties in this year's cricket season while another has won the coveted Will Sheppard Memorial Trophy for golf.

Year 6 student Abhiram Miryala plays for Hilton Cricket Club and has been chosen to play representative indoor cricket.

Not one but two Year 8 pupils have also been selected in the under 13 Derbyshire squad. Darashun Atwal, a bowling all-rounder, plays for Etwall and has also been identified as part of the England indoor pathway. He is joined on the Derbyshire squad by George Blount who plays for Quarndon.

Teenager Ayaan Aziz, in Year 11 at the school, has been selected to play for Leicestershire this summer.

In March this year, Derby Grammar School signed an agreement to sponsor Mickey Arthur, a member of Derbyshire County Cricket Club’s first team coaching staff.

Chris Whitworth, Head of PE at Derby Grammar School, said: “We wish this quartet the best of luck in playing for their county teams, as well as their club and school sides. The PE department will be working closely with the county club as part of its sponsorship with Derbyshire to continue the boys’ individual cricketing development.”

On the golfing green Adam Gentles has won the Will Sheppard Memorial Trophy for golf.

The trophy is awarded to the Year 10 pupil in Derbyshire who has achieved the lowest gross score on the golf course.

By winning the coveted trophy, Adam has qualified to represent Derby Grammar School in the English Schools Under 16s Championships at Chesterfield Golf Club in July.

And, if that wasn’t enough, he also finished fifth out of 51 golfers in the Net Competition, which has qualified him to represent the school in the County Schools matchplay Championships in September.

Mr Paul Logan, Head of Derby Grammar School, said: “I congratulate Adam on behalf of the school, and thank his teachers for their excellent support for Adam across his many sports. This is a testament to Adam's hard work, and the flexibility Derby Grammar School can offer pupils, allowing an individual programme that gives them opportunities to excel.”

Earlier this year, Adam was also chosen to captain the Derbyshire Under 16 Golf Team throughout the 2022 season, culminating in the 10 Counties Championship in October.

Adam said: “I am extremely proud of this honour and am looking forward to leading the squad to an exciting season ahead, along with representing Derby Grammar School.”
