Tributes paid to HRH The Duke of Edinburgh

We are very proud that so many Derby Grammar School pupils have achieved Bronze, Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards since the School was founded. The sad news that HRH The Duke of Edinburgh had passed away, led DofE participants at Derby Grammar School to reflect on how the Award has changed their lives.

I have enjoyed taking part in DofE through the years and doing the charity work in particular benefits the wider community. Watching the memorials to HRH The Duke of Edinburgh has helped me appreciate the vision behind it and how Prince Philip’s life shaped the different elements of the Award.” Y13 pupil

For me the Duke of Edinburgh Award is all about the people you are doing it with. And, after listening to lots of people talk about the Duke of Edinburgh over the past few days it is clear to me that one of his main values was his family and his friends.

Throughout the DofE process I have really enjoyed orienteering around the countryside and helping out a charity for both my Bronze and Silver Awards. Achieving the Awards has given me a real sense of pride and purpose and I have discovered qualities about myself such as leadership and good team working during tough times.

For me, the DofE award means taking on new challenges, and new skills. The best parts of the DofE have been meeting up with friends,  doing something together independently on the expedition, and learning new skills for the other sections, many of which I will carry on. I hope to complete the Silver very soon, and move on to Gold!

The Duke of Edinburgh Award has given me the opportunity to try out new things that I have really enjoyed and wouldn’t have had a go at otherwise. It has given me firm friends for life, (many an anecdote), and a more enriched and rounded education, for which I am extremely grateful.
