At Derby Grammar School we are proud to have so many fantastic members of staff. This term, we look to focus on our brilliant specialist Primary School Staff, starting with Mr Smyth.
Mr Smyth has over 15 years experience of working within youth development, sports coaching and teaching. Prior to joining Derby Grammar 5 years ago, he worked at Leicester Tigers developing and delivering community rugby programmes across the UK and Europe working with schools, rugby clubs and community groups. Outside of his school commitments, Mr Smyth is a regional coach for the Scottish Exiles rugby programme, providing an avenue for young talented players who are qualified to play for Scotland through Regional, Age Group and Performance programmes.
Whilst a big rugby fan, Mr Smyth enjoys all sports and inspiring pupils to participate in sport and physical activity at all levels.
Mr Smyth is Director of Junior School Sport and Head of Sports Performance. He works across the whole school, teaching PE and Games (plus swimming in the Junior School). He also coordinates inter school fixtures in our main sports of Rugby, Hockey and Cricket from Year 3 to Year 6.
As Head of Sports Performance Mr Smyth provides an off field sporting education to Senior School boys on our Sports Scholarship Programme covering topics such as nutrition, strength and conditioning, goal setting, performance profiling, lifestyle management and the importance of mental wellbeing and good sleep.
